introduction
Towns, buildings, and all other constructions contain the collective wisdom of their intrinsic culture, passed down from generation to generation. The Ciudad de Cali neighborhood has a long history of community struggles. For the past thirty years, private urbanization and the suspension of formal property rights to informal owners have led to a complex dynamic rife with conflicting interests between inhabitants.

In this state, the fragments of policies in each divided community have been reinforced by the recent past and the current reality. It is in neighborhoods like these that a building of questionable architectural value can bring invaluable community esteem.
The Core Team
The Asociación de Vecinos del barrio de Kennedy: a team composed mainly of residents, saw the opportunity to restore an abandoned gathering place where they demonstrated their stories through murals, graffiti, and other urban expressions. At the very first stage, the idea of the reconstruction came from shared interests and due to the proximity to the community gathering place nearby.

Their objective was to repair and furnish the remaining reinforced concrete columns and brick wall structures in a Do-It-Yourself fashion, without formal plans and proposals.

It was only when the community association met the collective of Arquitectura Expandida that the plan started to evolve. A new name was given to the place, reconciling the past with the present and giving the site a brand new identity.

For locals, the name Tr3bol means clever. The number 3 indicates a new spatial organization made of 3 spaces: skate park, event hall, and community garden. The Tre3bol represents the union between neighborhood recovery and its memory maintenance, resulting in an exchange dynamic of territorial pedagogies.

Materials and design process
The design began with the existing structure as a foundational framework, then sought to build a consolidated meeting place for workshops, talks, screenings, and exhibitions, developed from the first assemblies and workshops of participatory design.

All these paralleled the self-construction process that took place organically over the renewal itself. The centerpiece of this rehabilitation is the event hall, which extends the existing structure using guadua bamboo and other commonly used materials. The hall is not an enclosed building but instead remains permeable. The walls made of open bamboo panels are consist of patterns inspired by the local environment, both filtering the daylight and directing visitors to the entrance.

Impact
The neighborhood association called Trébol de todos y todos was organized to resist threats of demolition. Together with the Collective Amnesia Selectiva, they have transformed the space for cultural use and created a vibrant neighborhood hub. The DADEP (Administrative Department of Public Space) has responded positively and in dialogue to this request and the Local Mayor's Office has desisted (so far only informally) from the demolition.

During the pandemic, the Tr3bol offers the community a place to meet, exchange ideas and give mutual support. The community gathers together to work on the shared garden. This intervention demonstrates that the desires of a community can become realized and shared for the next generation to come and that the collaboration between the experts and the community strengthens the local resilience towards land speculation and market forces.
