Goals and motivations
I went to Malawi at the start of 2020 as a Volunteer Architect, with the intention of leading the design of the Beehive Technology and Enterprise Park. I returned two months later due to Covid and have since been working remotely from the UK, in both designing the campus and applying for funding to support Beehive during these challenging times. Beehive is an inspiring organisation, who focuses on supporting the most vulnerable in society. Surplus profits from the organisation go into community outreach work, expanding its impact far beyond employees. There is a strong community spirit, where no one is left behind, and it is governed by the Catholic principle of ‘Public Service, Personal Sacrifice.’ What motivates me is seeing the tangible impact of architecture on the local community, both in terms of the opportunities created for inhabitants and the opportunity for capacity building and skills development through its design. I enjoy working with the local team, in developing a project that is both aspirational and sensitive to the local culture and context. My goal is to return to Malawi once the current border restrictions have been lifted, to oversee the construction of the first building on site, as well as help develop future buildings that will occupy the site.
