What is GC2025?

The Global Challenge isn’t just another design competition. It’s the only global program designed to support the upscaling of local-led, community-based, architectural initiatives.

Scale Your Impact
Eligible Projects

Eligible projects are published on the A--D website, expanding their reach.

15 Long-listed Projects

Long-listed projects (15) are featured on social media, gaining visibility among potential collaborators.

5 Finalists

Finalists receive tailored guidance to secure funding, partnerships, and resources with assistance from ambassadors and partners.

What kind of projects is
A--D looking for?

We seek community-driven projects at the scale-up stage—where communities and professionals make decisions collectively. Eligible projects must be ready to scale with key stakeholders already onboard. This challenge is not for early-stage ideas.

What are the key criteria?
Scaling-up Phase

The project must be in the scaling-up stage, demonstrating readiness for growth with financial and human resources or a clear strategy to mobilize them.

Core team

The project must have a dedicated core team with a proven track record of strong community engagement and active collaboration with key stakeholders.

Success Stories

Condition Lab—the team behind the project—has expanded its outreach, connecting with our 2022 partners, Aga Khan Development Network and Sheffield School of Architecture, through exchange sessions and symposiums.

  • Cocina Colaboratorio, Mexico

With support from GC2021’s Holcim Foundation award, the team launched co-design workshops on-site, collaborating with the renowned architecture practice Taller Comunal, and the project’s network continues to expand.

What is the Global Challenge (GC)?

The Global Challenge is our biennial program that supports community-led projects through strategic, needs-based collaboration. We invite architects and community leaders to submit their projects for consideration, matching global expertise with local needs, fostering partnerships, climate-resilient solutions, and connecting communities to global networks and leaders in social innovation.

+
Why does A--D organize the Global Challenge program?

Because no existing awards or programs recognize and support the best practices in self-built, informal, and bottom-up contexts—despite their vital contributions to communities worldwide. These initiatives deserve as much attention and funding as acclaimed, high-profile projects.

As a bottom-up, volunteer-led, and network-driven initiative, A--D exists to increase the collective visibility of passionate professionals, teams, and community-led practices in underrepresented regions.

If you share this vision, join the Global Challenge. This program amplifies our collective efforts—shifting the way we think about and practice architecture, from what a client wants to what humanity needs.
