I am fascinated by the ways in which nodes of urbanity develop and function. I am particularly interested in the challenges for creating sustainable –or resilient- cities and neighbourhoods, and the strategic approaches of local governments to create an all-encompassing long-term urban development vision. Against the backdrop of an ever more participatory urban development, and creative skills being introduced in order to overcome the erosion of the urban fabric and its natural habitats, cities need urban planning strategies that go beyond the simple “solving of current problems”, and propose visions that can grow alongside the changing environment surrounding, or overlapping with, these cities. The scope of urban development therefore relies not only on infrastructure, but also on the subtleties of the relations between places, functions, users and ideas that are developed and implemented. As such, I believe that space and use are only 2 of many more elements that need to be taken in consideration when planning for a city. How will a place evolve in time, and in the kind of users it will accommodate?
